Frontgrid will install two of its motion-based Paradrop VR pods this summer, which combine physical movement with virtual content to immerse players in the experience.
The new attraction will see players take on an interactive airborne mission that has been designed to complement the museum’s existing simulations, cockpit trainers and aviation exhibits.
Titled Mountain Ops, the mission will place guests inside a simulated airborne operation, beginning with a briefing sequence before players parachute into a mountainous environment behind enemy lines. From there, they will descend through a series of waypoints, supporting an allied advance while avoiding incoming fire, environmental hazards and contested airspace.
Matt Wells, CEO of Frontgrid, said: “The National Naval Aviation Museum is an incredible setting for this kind of experience.
“ParadropVR complements their existing simulators and exhibits by adding a new, interactive element that is both accessible and engaging. It gives people an exhilarating experience, whilst being approachable for all the family – and gives the sense of being on a mission in a way a static exhibit simply can’t.”
Wells is a former paratrooper in the British Army and said that it was rewarding to bring an airborne-themed experience in a venue dedicated to aviation history in a way that feels authentic and respectful.
The museum’s president and CEO, rear admiral Kyle Cozad, said: “The Paradrop VR experience gives our visitors the chance to feel the adrenaline, anticipation and excitement of a simulated parachute jump in a safe and immersive environment. Experiences like this help bring the spirit of naval aviation and adventure to life in an entirely new way for our visitors.”
Frontgrid has now installed ParadropVR attractions across 16 countries and the Pensacola-based museum is the third military museum to feature it.
